NEW YORK — When I last introduced fashion designer Tori-Nichel to you, she dished on her experience as a contestant on season 2 of NBC's "Fashion Star" in an exclusive interview. She didn't win on the show, but as an emerging designer, she's on fire and has recenlty released a new "Candyland" dress collection for summer.

The collection is chock full of chic frocks in vibrant colors, fun silhouettes, and breezy fabrics; like "The Rachel" asymmetrical silk printed mini zebra dress (pictured above). I invited her to be a guest agent and share with us her must-haves.

She confessed that when it comes to beauty, she's low maintenance and equips her beauty arsenal with Dove soap and lotion. Just a few things she has on her radar are Tom Ford aviators with mirrored lenses, Chanel pearl necklace from the spring collection, and a Burberry lace trench coat – j'adore!. She also admits to needing a little Maroon 5, "Overexposed" on occasion.

Check out her radar highlights:

GLOBAL — While on a mission to restock my beauty arsenal for spring and summer, I came across a new color collection for eyes, lips, and cheeks from Stila Cosmetics. Their makeup is always so bright, vivid, and fun!

The cherry-flavored After Glow Lip Color, $18, is enriched with vitamin C and E. Not only is it good for your lips, it creates a cool effect that changes from day to night with florescent pigments making it three times brighter in the sunlight than traditional lip color and when the sun goes down, black light sensitive pigments make it glow when exposed to ultraviolet light.

The Countless Color Pigments, $22, compacts contains three shades that can be used individually or mixed for a multi-shade streaked effect. They are full-coverage with a pearlescence.

GLOBAL — Whether you're preparing for a seaside vacay abroad or a picnic in the park, you'll need the perfect shoes to complement your look and complete your mission of fun. If you plan on embracing the black and white trend for your fashion ensemble, the snakeskin printed Sam Edeleman "Gigi" sandal, $64.95, will add a pop of color including mandarin orange, indigo blue, citron yellow, turquoise time, and vivid violet.

TAKE NOTE: These sandals bare all, so a pretty pedicure is a must. For a classic look go for a French pedi. Sport a shimmery metallic for something a bit more edgy.

GLOBAL — Typically for spring and summer we see pastels and vibrant colors, but this season black and white trumps color. It's all about graphic prints like stripes, checks, and geometric shapes in black and white – and I'm loving it! Although it's common to rock black and white prints in our accessories, it's also cool to sport the look head-to-toe. But if it seems a bit much for your fashion sensibility, a sleek pair of striped capris or flirty polka dot dress works too!

GLOBAL — One of my favorite accessories is the handbag and every season I have my go-to "it" bag handy for sartorial sleuthing. Lately, I've been noticing a trend toward smaller handbags and clutches. I'm particularly fond of the themed styles. Whether it's a boxy clutch designed to look like a book or a mini bag shaped like fruit, there are myriad options. On my radar currently is the Charlotte Olympia yellow "Perspex" clutch. So no more delaying, call her and reserve time for you to visit and regale her with a midday pamerping session.

Let's start with cocktails, shall we? Or should I say manis and pedis. How about both with the non-toxic Scotch Naturals Cocktail Trio set. You can select any three hues you like from their Water Colors collection.

While jazzing up her nails, make sure she has delectable treats to nibble like a flavorful selection of macarons. You can pick them up at a local French pastry shop or make it super special and bake them yourself!

Finally, give her the opportunity to brag about how wonderful you are. Get her a Pop Phone Retro Handset for her mobile phone. She can call all her friends and give them the scoop on her special day, courtesy of you.

SAN FRANCISCO – The fashion documentary to watch this year is "Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf's." Whether you are a fashion connoisseur or someone who merely appreciates beautifully designed clothes, you'll love this film. We recently caught up with the director Matthew Miele, to get the scoop on what it was like to create the film and his post-production experience.

Why choose to do a documentary?

The project all started with my interest in the windows. I was mostly fascinated with the extravagant features. Since there were no archival documents on [Bergdorf's], I decided it would be a great idea to figure it all out. It was also an opportunity for me to collectively support and exploit the common demeanor all the designers had in common.

What interest do you have in the fashion industry that inspired you to start this project?

I am not interested in fashion what so ever. I respect fashion as an art form, and I acknowledge the ingenuity and design of it.

What were the most challenging aspect of the project, and what was the most rewarding?

The most challenging was once we had a few designers we had to include everyone. So that was the most challenging, getting everyone together. The most rewarding was being able to tell the story. Keeping Herman, Edwin and Andrew Bergdorf’s legacy. Being able to do that was a heavy responsibility, but yet the most rewarding.

Would you consider or do you plan on filming more movies on fashion related topics, or possibly another fashion documentary?

I am actually starting a new film on a store in New York, which unfortunately can’t be revealed. It isn’t necessarily fashion related, but is equally impressive as "Scatter my Ashes at Bergdorf’s" and A-listed.

Where would you scatter your ashes at Bergdorf’s?

There is a fountain out in the front of the store – the triple layer fountain called Audrey – is where I would scatter them. It is actually a special fountain, and I hope to someday tell a story about her.

SAN FRANCISCO — Who would give up an opportunity to spend the day at Bergdorf Goodman's? But, if that is not an option, how about attending a screening of Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf's a documentary featuring some of fashion's most notable designers and insiders? The event kicked off with festive fare at Cupola Pizzeria in Westfield Centre. It was a luxe spread of catered lamb balls, Neapolitan pizza, red wine and a delectable buffet of self-serve bonbons to savor.

While eagerly waited to watch the film and get a peak inside the legendary walls of the famed Manhattan retailer, we spotted a few famous faces such as Joy Bianchi, a local fashion icon and philanthropist. After mingling with guests and nibbling appetizers, we were escorted to the cinema with our VIP admission tickets. The lights dimmed, and soon we were entering the doors of 5th Avenue’s luxury department store, Bergdorf Goodman.

The film was a homage to the legacy of Bergdorf Goodman and featured interviews with myriad designers running the gamut from Diane von Furstenberg to Patricia Fields. Director Matthew Miele delivered a poised and keen interpretation of the fashions carried at the store, which is seen as one of New York City’s major landmarks. Miele highlighted elements of what makes Bergdorf Goodman such a marvel and an addictive dose of eye candy for anyone passionately interested in fashion.

The window display segment was the most engaging of them all, curated by Bergdorf's visual artist David Hoey and style guru Linda Fargo. The behind-the-scenes workings of what it takes to create the store's legendary holiday windows was magnificent, demonstrating over a course of a year how and what is done in order to prepare.

Throughout the documentary, there was also an unexpected, yet delightful array of quotes frominterviews with A-list designers including Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs, even Karl Lagerfeld who said, “I am born careful … I am a lucky person who can do what I want, in divine conditions."

This documentary spanned a course of a hundred years, yet it brilliantly captured the essence of Bergdorf Goodman in a short amount of time. Matthew Miele should be credited for being an industry outsider who was able to engage and educate a fashion savvy audience and let us peer inside Bergdorf's from a bystanders perspective.

I was happy to take a plunge into the past with Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby."

PLOT: Unless you've been tucked beneath a rock for the past year, you've undoubtedly heard about Baz Luhrmann's film adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby; a story about the rich and elusive Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), known for throwing lavish parties, at which he is seldom seen.

Since first reading the novel as a tweener, I pondered whether it was really about Jay Gatsby or the narrator Nick Carraway (Tobey Macguire). Is it Carraway's ambition of financial success and desire to fit in with the well-to-do that is the focus; or is it about Gatsby's devotion to the self-centered Daisy, which we are glaringly reminded of throughout the film in the form of a daisy motif. It's in his sprawling courtyard, on a duvet cover for his bed, in the bottom of his pool, and on a signet ring he wears on his pinky finger?

Carraway seeks fortune on Wall Street as a bonds salesman and lives modestly in a cottage in the nouveau riche area of West Egg next door to Gatsby, who is determined to win the heart of socialite Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton) and lives in a mansion in old money East Egg directly across the river from Gatsby. Gatsby frequently stares across the river at the Buchanan estate and observes a green light intermittently shining, almost like a beacon of hope.

ENGAGEMENT: The story has been told before – in a novel as well as onscreen adaptions. So, it's unlikely anyone can say they've never heard of "The Great Gatsby." But it's as if Luhrmann gives us a peak inside the mind of Fitzgerald as he concepts the elaborate tale featuring Gatsby in all his glory wearing a tailored pink suit, driving a fancy yellow car, and living in a castle-like estate.

It's then that we might see what Fitzgerald saw; a grand spectacle with vibrant visuals such as a raging cocktail party hazed by fluttering confetti, majestic mansions towering above, and the sound of jazz tunes rythmically infused with booming beats. Luhrmann's version is modernized. Not only does he deliver it with accuracy, but brings to life the glitz and glam, as well as the doom and dispair Fitzgerald presumedly envisioned when penning the epic tale.

STYLE: As captivating the dialogue, imapctful the imagery, and solid the acting – so are the costumes. It's the climax to the film, giving the actors the final element needed to create their characters, from Gatsby's flamboyant suits and brighlty-colored broadcloth shirts to Daisy's embellished gowns and jeweled accessories.

The impeccable style showcased in the movie is owed to Luhrmann's wife and the costume designer for the film, Catherine Martin. She orchestrated the costuming from head-to-toe, shrewdly enlisting the expertise of Miuccia Prada, Brooks Brothers, and Tiffany & Co. Prepare to be regaled with costume finery not seen since Audrey Hepburn graced the big screen in "Roman Holiday" (1953). Martin definitely channeled the styling prowess of costuming legend Edith Head for her work on the sartorially savvy film.

Perhaps Jay Gatsby is right when he declares to Nick Carraway that the past can be repeated. Baz Luhrmann has taken us back to a place and time in American culture filled with a sense of prosperity, indulgence, and wreckless abandon that was the zeitgeist of the 1920s and I was happy to take the plunge into the past, even if for a brief moment.

Release: Friday, May 10th

100% on my radar:

Costumes from "The Great Gatsby" film are making the rounds and we caught an exhibit at Prada in Soho!

SOHO — Despite the hype you may have heard about the unveiling of "The Great Gatsby" costumes last week at Prada, nothing quite prepared me for the vision of pure fashion opulence that awaited at the luxury purveyor's Soho flagship.

Upon walking into the Broadway location, you notice that the high gloss hardwood floors are sloped downward to the center of the store’s lower lever. On this slope are built-in descending steps on which any type of new products or special displays can be housed in a dramatic, cascading manner. Now imagine this space completely staged with some of the most amazing period costumes one can possibly design with walls covered in floor to ceiling posters from the movie and film footage looping on numerous flat screens in the background. Yes, it was an impressive sight to behold.

The 1920's style of Fitzgerald’s famed characters become the epicenter of Prada. The looks of Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan), Myrtle Wilson (Isla Fisher), and other ornately-clad characters were paramount to the exhibit and lent themselves to further build anticipation for Baz Luhrmann's adaption of the classic American novel.

The 1974 version of the story from Francis Ford Coppola starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow earned nods for fashion big wigs of the day like Ralph Lauren, but Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada's collaborative work on the costuming for the latest film, is sure to set a new bar for recreating Fitzgerald's vivid depictions of the characters and the zeitgeist of the roaring twenties.

Noteworthy designs included crystal-draped cocktail dresses lined with silk georgette and custom Art Deco t-strap heels that Miuccia sketched herself for some of Daisy’s final scenes. Although the Prada show highlighted fashion and costuming for the women, it should also be noted that Brooks Brothers, who staged a Gatsby-themed extravaganza in London at their Regent Street store in late April, did a stellar job of creating the men’s style for the film including looks for Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) and Tobey Macguire (Nick Carraway).

If you have a free evening this week and happen to be in NYC, head to the Soho district to catch the exhibit before it ships off to Tokyo on May 12th.

Stay Chic,

Get the look of a 1920's flapper like Jordan Baker from "The Great Gatsby."

GLOBAL — Lately I've been craving anything from the roaring 20s. I'd be fibbing if I didn't admit that the upcoming The Great Gatsby film has sparked my frenzy for the Jazz Age, when sassy young ladies helped usher in a modern America; frequenting jazz-infused speakeasies, sipping cocktails, and dancing the night away in fringed frocks. In the film, Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki) is the quintessential flapper girl – she has a glamorous wardrobe, a chic bob, and striking makeup.

But besides impeccable style, a spirited attitude, and a love for partying, flappers rebelled against the status quo and set their own fashion and beauty trends for the era. They had a penchant for flawless skin with dramatic eyes, rosy cheeks, and a perfect ruby pout. Here are a few tips and must-haves to building your flapper-inspired beauty arsenal.

FLAWLESS FACE

You're a busy girl who loves to socialize and mingle, right? Wear a long-lasting foundation that will take you from day to night like the Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H, $45. Dust lightly with a loose powder to control shine like the Studio Gear Invisible loose powder, $24.

SMOKY EYES

It's all about the coquettish doe-eyed look. Create a smudged, smoky eye effect with dark shadows and a liner like the Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama gel eyeliner, $9.99. Don't forget the faux lashes and brow liner like the Benefit Instant brow pencil, $20, for slender and sleek eyebrows.

ROSY CHEEKS

Apply blush to your cheekbones for a natural come-hither look like the limited edition Nars Pierre Hardy Blush Palette in "Boys Don't Cry" with the iconic Avant-Garde print, $41.

POUTY LIPS

The essential element to a flapper look is the perfect red pout. Make sure to create an even-tone canvas by applying foundation or primer to lips. Next step is to highlight the cupid-bow by drawing a line following your natural lip curve right inside the edge of the lip with a red liner like the MAC Lip Pencil, $15. Then apply a true red lip color like the Rouge G de Guerlain Lipcolor, $49.50, within the defined cupid-bow.

Now you're ready for a flapper fête!

GLOBAL — In less than two weeks, Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby film, adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's epic tale about the decadent 1920s, will hit the theaters in 3D on May 10th. Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan co-star in the much-anticipated film as Jay Gatsby, the opulent bootlegger and Daisy Buchanan, the glamorous socialite. But they're not the only characters set to mesmerize us on the big screen.

A major character, not to be dismissed, is costuming, which was chicly orchestrated by the films costume designer Catherine Martin who collaborated with Miu Miu, Prada, and Brooks Brothers for fashions and Tiffany & Co. for jewelry. The jewelry collection created for the film is exquisite, with detailed designs reminiscent of the Art Deco period such as the jeweled headpiece Daisy Buchanan wears and signet ring Jay Gatsby sports in the film. Get the deets in a Q&A on what inspired Catherine Martin (above) and why she chose Tiffany jewels for the film.

What are your design inspirations?

I take my design inspirations from many sources. But when you're working with a director and you're trying to interpret his vision for a film, the very first inspiration is always how the director envisions telling a story and your job is to help support that telling. In the design process for a film, I look to original sources that relate to the work that we are trying to bring to life, including photographs, paintings, other works by the author, photographic collections and anecdotal descriptions that were written in the period or setting in which the story takes place.

Tiffany & Co. is historically relevant as the luxury American jeweler of the time. How does this help in the design of the jewelry as it related to the filmmaking process? Was this the first time you designed jewelry?

Tiffany & Co was an obvious partner for The Great Gatsby because of its authentic relationship to New York, the fact that the social milieu the novel deals with is the type of customer the brand appeals to, the fact that it is a quintessentially American luxury brand and also because Fitzgerald was himself a customer of Tiffany & Co. This authenticity meant the brand was a perfect fit as the producers of the jewelry for this film.

This has been the first time that I have been involved in the process of designing jewelry and while I'm used to working with detail as a costume and set designer, there's a different scale to the level of detail, craftsmanship and precision needed in designing jewelry. It is on a completely different level because you are engineering something so beautiful and so seemingly delicate that actually has to function practically and have inherent strength and longevity.

How did the Tiffany archives inspire you, in terms of the costume and design story?

The item that really inspired me from the archives was the drawing of the headpiece that inspired Daisy's party headpiece. I felt it defined Daisy's character and describes the 1920s so quintessentially that I could not ignore it. The extraordinary combination of pearls and pavé diamonds culminates in an exquisite and delicate yet dramatic headband that has become one of the most iconic pieces of jewelry in the film.

As a designer, you define characters visually and use wardrobe to further tell their story. How do the Tiffany & Co. pieces add vitality to the movie? Do you feel the actors benefit from having these kinds of collaborations as an extension of their character?

I think that having such genuinely exquisite and luxurious jewelry pieces adds to the characters' visual development because these pieces reflect their status in society, their wealth and their ability to buy beautiful things. I think that certainly in the 1920s and even today, fine jewelry is a way of publicly announcing your success and wealth and this is something that Tom Buchanan does with his wife. In addition to the production value of using authentic fine jewelry, the use of these incredibly valuable pieces helps immerse the actors in the world of the character they are inhabiting.

Which pieces are most integral to the film? What is your favorite piece(s) and why?

Gatsby's signet ring with the Daisy symbol is our nod to his obsessive love for Daisy. It is a very integral symbol in the film because it has been reproduced in his house, on his person and everywhere you look in his mansion, he has applied a daisy decoration. The daisy, traditionally a symbol of purity is meant to signal to the audience his pure, obsessive and overwhelmingly powerful love he has for Daisy.

What inspired you to create the pearl and diamond bracelet worn by Daisy in the film?

In thinking about how we could use jewelry to help express Daisy's character in her close ups, Baz suggested I look at the combination of diamonds and pearls as this refined classical and rarefied combination seemed to reflect the rarefied and coldly sophisticated world of the Buchanans. I turned to the diamond and pearl inspiration from the headpiece illustration … It seemed a great way to describe Daisy's position in society and to underline her situation as Tom's bird in a gilded cage, adorned by precious jewels.

I had also found an illustration from the 1920s that showed a bracelet design with a compact attached to it that sat on top of the hand and fitted with rings. I also have a fascination with India and combined the traditional Indian shapes with this idea to create the pavé diamond daisy medallion that is the centerpiece of the hand pieces. All these elements and influences were brought together to create these hand pieces that, along with the headband, became a quintessential part of Daisy's party costume.

Anne Hathaway beats out a bevy of beauties, including Audrey Hepburn, for all time best hairstyle.

GLOBAL — There was much fodder on and offline when actress Anne Hathaway lopped off her raven locks for her starring roll in "Les Misérable" (2012). But the lithe actress gets the last laugh, because not only did she win an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for the film, the pixie 'do she got as a result of that role has been named "The Most Influential Haircut of All Time" by the Hairdressing Council of Great Britain and Universal Pictures.

In a poll they conducted, 1000 people voted on the most influential onscreen haircut of all time and Hathaway beat out a bevy of beauties with her cropped hairdo, including second place Jennifer Aniston who sported a long shaggy look for "Along Came Polly" (2004) and third place Audrey Hepburn who donned a coiffed updo for "Charades" (1963).

Celebs frequently have to make drastic changes to their appearance to accomodate a roll, causing us to gasp; from Renee Zelweger's weight gain for "Bridget Jones's Diary" (2001) to the uglification of Charlize Theron in "Monster" (2003). When it comes to hair-raising changes, Demi Moore in "G.I. Jane" and her baldness, come to mind. Admittedly Hathaway's short style was not as dramatic.

When most hemmed and hawed about how the look did not become her, it grew on me. Sure it's a far cry from her chicness in "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006) or cuteness in "The Princess Diaries" (2001), but after all, its the evolution of a good actress. Offscreen however, I do think other actresses mastered the crop well before Hathaway embraced the look including Halle Berry, Ginnifer Goodwin, Michelle Williams, and Charlize Theron.

According to the poll, 1 in 10 women were inspired to go short after the film, but before you run out to your stylist and request the cut, there's a beauty code to rocking the pixie 'do and it's determined by your face shape. Round and oval work best with this hairstyle, accentuating features such as striking cheek bones and dramatic eyes.

Tom Cruise is on another mission to save the world in futuristic film "Oblivion." Check out my radar rating!

PLOT: Sixty years after a devastating war with aliens, Earth is barren and the state of the world is bismal in Oblivion. Despite winning the war, most of Earth's inhabitants have fled to another planet except for a repairman Jack (Tom Cruise) and his "partner" Victoria (Andrea Riseborough). But they're not alone.

ENGAGEMENT: There's action and high-tech futuristic gadgetry to keep you entertained, however, this is the typical Tom Cruise film. He's out to save the world, that has long since been destroyed. Soon soon finds himself on a mission to rescue it from oblivion whilst repairing drones, a weapon used to track and eliminate threats. His curiosity leads him to discover relics from the past and experience flashbacks to a time he doesn't remember. The "Twilight Zone" plot twist will definitely intrigue you, momentarily.

STYLE: It's 2077 and the look is high-tech and sterile, with costumes including metalic leather suits and architecture reminiscent of the "The Jetsons." Iceland, where the movie was filmed, served as the backdrop, which made for some beautiful scenes.

Release: Friday, April 19th

50% on my radar:

BEVERLY HILLS — Emma Roberts, the niece of Julia Roberts, who has starred in films such as "Nancy Drew" and "Scream 4," was recently spotted shopping in the Hills, carrying a Loeffler Randall “Mini Rider” bag in the Tucker floral print.
The silk and linen bag trimmed in leather, is a cute complement to jeans and a billowy white shirt. It would also be cute paired with a little black dress and metallic flats. J'adore!

Anna Wintour is the new artistic director for Condé Nast and her first job is to revive "Lucky."

NEW YORK — Last month it was announced that Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue and editorial director of Teen Vogue was appointed the artistic director for Condé Nast, apparently a role that was created specifcally for her. When I first heard the news, I didn't think much of it, considering she's arguably the most famous (or shall I say infamous) magazine editor, and highly revered for the evolution of Vogue during her tenor. So when I recently spied an article on nymag.com posing the question "Can Anna Wintour Save Lucky Magazine?," I instantly became intrigued.

Frankly, I didn't know that Lucky was in trouble. According to the article, the magazine has been losing steam, reporting a 20 percent decline in ad pages and 30 percent drop in newsstand sales for 2012. It also mentioned how Lucky magazine has made a push towards digital and e-commerce, which explains their eagerness to affiliate with bloggers via their online style collective and blogger conferences held on the East and West Coasts.

With these latest developments it's got me pondering whether Wintour's new role will strengthen the Condé Nast brand of magazines or simply weaken one of their strongest publications, Vogue. After all, she is only one woman. but considering the one woman is Anna Wintour, that may be enough, or will it?
