Movie Brief: Me Before You

The Alfred Lord Tennyson phrase from his poem Memoriam A.H.H., ‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all” is the overarching theme of “Me Before You” and I have intel to help you decide if the romantic drama should be on your must-watch radar!

Plot: Quirky small town girl Louise Clark (Emilia Clarke), known affectionately by family and friends as ‘Lou’ loses her job at a local diner. Desperate for money to help her family, who have fallen on hard luck, Lou takes a seemingly easy gig as caregiver to Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), a once athletically adventurous young man, who was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. Her new role sets her and—her unwilling patient—on an a new and unexpected journey.

Engagement: If you can’t resist a good love story, this movie is sure to bring you to the brink of tears and stir empathetic emotions you never knew you could have for fictional characters. The premise of “Me Before You” is a love story we’ve seen before—but there’s an air of relatabilty about this film (disregarding the castle where Sam resides) that after watching the movie, may compel you to create a bucket list or lament over memories of unrequited love. Lou’s character is the girl you’d want as your best friend, whether a guy or girl, which is what makes the character dynamic and so relatable. It it is her carefree charm that helps lift Sam’s spirit.

Style: Lou’s style in this film is significant in establishing her whimsical persona. She’s cheery and eccentric illustrated by her collection of floral, bow embellished shoes and her admitted love of bumble bee stripe tights. You can’t help but love her charmingly kitschy style.

Release: Friday, June 3rd
