Remember Me is a raw, true to life film about a rebellious young man named Tyler (Robert Pattinson), who is at odds with his successful, career-driven father, ever since the wealthy family encountered a personal tragedy. Set in New York City, the romantic drama spans a decade and deals with the trials and tribulations of two families — one from Queens, the other from Manhattan — who are dealt violent tragedies that threaten to destroy them.

The lives of these two families intersect haphazardly when Tyler falls for Ally (Emilie de Ravin), who revitalizes and inspires him, and just happens to be the daughter of a policeman (Chris Cooper) who roughs him up. This film is a modern nod to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. But adversity among family members of the star-crossed lovers is where the similarities begin and end. The path this story takes is a heartwrenching, unexpected detour that will lead you down a winding emotional path.

The most unexpected surprise, and pleasing too, is how well lead actor and executive producer Robert Pattinson performs. Pattinson, who catapulted to fame as the brooding vampire in love with a mere mortal in “Twilight” and the sequel “New Moon,” is riveting. Don’t expect to see the somber and mysterious Edward Cullen from the vampire franchise. Pattinson shed that mystic exterior for a more rugged and rebellious persona. Pierce Brosnan plays Pattinson’s father and is sturdy in his supporting, antagonistic role.

Although this film has an intense climax, there is a subtle levity throughout that bonds you to the characters making you empathize with their plight. Even more compelling about this film is the underlying message that beseeches us to live in the moment and appreciate the time we have with those we care about. After all, who knows what the future holds?
