SCOTTSDALEPhoenix Fashion Week, which annually showcases emerging fashion designers from around the country, recently held a model casting call for their runway show in October. We received an exclusive invite to their behind-the-scenes model makeover featuring the models who were selected to walk in the upcoming show. The makeovers were courtesy of London-based hair salon, Toni&Guy. The salon, which boasts academies all over the world, is a sponsor of Phoenix Fashion Week. The Toni&Guy Scottsdale academy styled the models, both men and women, with brand new beauty looks and hair styles, from cropped ‘dos to wavy coifs.

The official model announcement is July 10th, but as one of the few media outlets present during the top secret model makeovers, we witnessed the hair and make-up professionals work wonders on 43 young hopefuls vying for Phoenix Fashion Week Model of the Year 2014, whose winners – one male and one female – will each secure a modeling contract with The Agency Arizona.

According to Jessica Fierro, lead make up artist, the overall vision for the makeovers is to bring out an angelic look in the models, revealing their fresh faces. Jessica used bronzers and highlighters of varying shades and very soft blush to enhance the cheekbones; warm brown and taupe hues to accentuate the eyes; and a neutral-tone shimmer lip gloss to emphasize their pouts.

In the mane department, it was like a chemistry experiment, formulating different shades and tones for the models who would get a dyed ‘do. The key to creating lovely locks is healthy hair, so it called for intense moisturizing treatments at the shampoo bowl to bring out lustrous shine and bouncy hair, which is a catwalk essential. For achieving similar hair off the runway, hairstylist Jason Permenter recommends weekly deep conditioning, using a moisturizing serum and pre-styling heat protectors, especially in the hot and dry desert climate.

There was a lot to take in during the full day makeover extravaganza, but when asked what they learned from the experience, some models shared practical answers such as, “Step by step how-to for smoky eyes was helpful” and “Wrapping hair around a curler instead of clamping hair is easier.”  While others gave more emotional response like, “The more open you are to change, the more possibilities and the better the experience.”

Touché.
