11 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Audrey Hepburn

I’ve always been an admirer of Audrey Hepburn, but who wouldn’t be; she’s a pop culture icon and one of the most dynamic celebrities of all time. After reading “Audrey at Home: Memories of My Mother’s Kitchen” by her son Luca Dotti, I realized there was much more to know and love about Ms. Hepburn. Here’s just a few of those things that you may not know.

  1. She was born in Belgium and her mother was a Baroness.
  2. She died six weeks after she was born due to complications from whooping cough, but was revived by her mother.
  3. She and her siblings were raised by her mother when her father disappeared.
  4. As a young girl, she wanted to be a classical ballerina.
  5. During WWII she ate grass and boiled tulips when there was nothing else to eat.
  6. She supported the resistance against the Nazi occupiers in Holland during WWII and would relay messages for them in her shoes.
  7. One point in her life at 16-years-old she stood at 5’6″ and weighed 88 pounds.
  8. After the war, a Dutch soldier gave her seven chocolate candy bars, which was one of the few meals she had in a while.
  9. She carried pasta in her suitcase when she traveled.
  10. Pasta and tomato sauce was her favorite dish and chocolate cake was her favorite dessert.
  11. She always ate breakfast, even during her monthly detox when she ate yogurt and grated apples.
