Global — This past holiday season I gave bottles of wine as gifts, including a few selections from the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. You may be thinking, "Isn't he a director?" Well you would be right. Francisc Ford Coppola is the genius behind the masterpiece "The Godfather," but he is also in the wine business and has been for more than 30 years with his winery in Napa Valley. It began when he purchased the vineyard of Gustave Niebaum in Rutherford, California in 1975, using some of the monies he recieved from the uber successful "The Godfather" trilogy [New York Times]. He even has his own line of pastas and sauces, but I digress, the topic is wine.
The eponymous winery has a sorted variety of wine from red and white to sparkling and rose. He even has a collection named for his daughter, director Sofia Coppola (Marie Antoinette), whom I interviewed for her film "Somewhere" starring Stephen Dorff (Blade). The collection includes Sofia Mini Blanc de Blancs, a sparkling wine that comes in a boxed 4-pack with chic 187ml cans with a straw included for each can. And, it's a mere $20 per pack. Any other time I would argue that wine in a can is déclassé, but this cute rose-hued can is quite lovely and would be great for a picnic in the park (those that allow alcohol of course) or maybe even for an outdoor wedding reception on the beach. But, if you just can't bare the thought of wine in a can, no fret, it comes in bottles too. I haven't tasted the wine yet, but with hints of tropical fruit and pineapple, it's definitely on my radar!
Chicly Yours,
