Among hordes of well-known, high-end designers to present there ready-to-wear collections on Friday were a talented collective of designers who honed their fashion design skills as graduate students of San Francisco-based Academy of Art University. Some students presented futuristic pieces that rival the work of some of the hottest designers today, while others chose to put an avant garde twist on the classic.
Anne Jones and Michelle Clarke
Anne Jones (Womenswear) and Michelle Clarke (Textile), Arizona and Texas natives respectively, teamed up to revolutionize shimmery fabric with tiers of plastic Mylar strips dyed in shades of electric blue and violet purple. The design duo were inspired by a piece from installation artist Olafur Elliason. [AAU BLOG]
The vibrant and ethnic patterns woven into Daniel Emir Armosilla‘s designs are as bold as his edgy design concept. The Manila-born knitwear designer was inspired by the travels of Californians, whom he describes as free-spirited and carefree. I am intrigued by the winding ballerina-esque ties that lace down (or up) the leg and whether they’re a part of the clothes or the shoes. [AAU BLOG]
Elena Akoulova created a bouquet of frocks in hues inspired by orchids. The Russian-born designer updated the look of the classic linen halter dress, into a refined dress with a billowy draped front, with a cascading tulle peaking out beneath the hem, and a soft summer palette of lavender purple, sunshine yellow, and sage green. J’adore the horizontal stripe of color at the hem. [AAU BLOG]
