Kicking off award season 2008, the 14th annual Screen Actor’s Guild awards much more than made up for the writer’s strike induced cancellation of the Golden Globe Awards late last year. Here, we divulge into the good, bad and ugly (of dresses that is), which our favorite celebrities proudly showed off on the red carpet this year.
BEST DRESSED
Debra Messing, who was nominated for her role in The Starter Wife, looked the epitome of grace in a glitzy gold Oscar de la Renta gown. With the dress’s intricate neckline, Debra’s subtle additions of Neil Lane earrings and ring avoided an over-accessorized look, while her tousled auburn waves looked effortlessly elegant.
At only 21-years-old, Hairspray’s funny girl Amanda Bynes’s radiated with an ethereal elegance. With an angelic braided hairdo, Amanda looked every inch a princess wearing a lovely blue sweeping Marchesa gown and Jimmy Choo heels.
Just like her character Amanda on Ugly Betty, Becki Newton is the ultimate glamorous fashionista! In a gorgeously tiered Elsie Katz dress, Becki sparkled like a snow queen, adorning her slim, floor-length dress with a simple Mary Norton clutch.
Looking quite the contrary to her scrubs-wearing character on Grey’s Anatomy in Fred Leighton jewelry, newlywed Ellen Pompeo, dazzled in her hand-picked platinum colored Nina Ricci gown. Ellen’s loose bun and minimal jewelry add a sleek severity to the metallic quality of the cascading gown.
WORST DRESSED
Maybe she was trying to shield herself from the rain in a decorated trash bag poncho or perhaps she was trying to relive the memories of senior prom 1985, but Grey’s Anatomy Sandra Oh (or shall we say Sandra Oh-No!) and her odd sheath of fabric really stood out — and not in a good way. With a giant pink bow and yards and yards of black fabric, unfortunately, this is one train wreck that cannot be salvaged, no matter how many Seattle Grace surgeons are involved.
Another Grey’s Anatomy actress, Chandra Wilson, wore a glittery mini dress that was more showgirl than SAG award, more awkward than award-winning. Way too sparkly, way too tight and way too out of place for a red carpet event, the horizontal stripes don’t flatter her petite plus-size physique and the blindingly bright glitter accents the wrong areas. While her hair and makeup are a definite do, if you add a boa and a rhinestone-encrusted microphone, Hannah Montana will want her outfit back!
Looking as if she just got back from a tropical vacation, all that 30 Rock’s Jane Krakowski is missing is a pair of sunglasses and a bottle of sunscreen. Although the neckline is a bit too fruity tooty for the red carpet, the odd ruching around the bust line is the real head turner. While the draping is pretty, the bright yellow and dull green is reminiscent of seasickness — so not envy.
BACK IN BLACK
Always a fan favorite, the little black dress proved to be a recurring theme of the evening. In fact, the amount of celeb’s in black deems to be uncountable! While many celebrities favored longer gowns (to name a couple, both Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz and Desperate Housewives’ Nicolette Sheridan sported strapless, floor lengths), a knee length black dress is a fresh take on an old favorite.
Juno’s Ellen Page looked sophisticated and sassy in a Zac Posen, and 30 Rock’s funny girl Tina Fey dazzled in a one shoulder strap Alberta Ferretti.
