Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) gets hired as an assistant to the owner of the fashion magazine Mode.
It soon becomes apparent to Betty that she was hired not for the talent she possesses but the attractiveness she lacks; but it’s only a matter of time before her initially unimpressed boss recognizes that Betty is pretty savvy.
So just what makes Betty so ugly? Is it her metal braces with the intertwined blue rubber bands that coat her smile? Maybe it’s the array of 80s sweater vests that she sports over boldly printed ensembles or even her plastic rim eyeglasses. In reality, it’s not what Betty chooses to wear that makes her appear unattractive but rather how she chooses to wear it.
A key mistake Betty makes is layering clothing which is not becoming for curvier figures. A fitted vest like this one from anthropologie.com (above) and — seen on Betty in Episode 2: The Box and the Bunny $49.95 (top) — is a good choice to minimize bulk if worn over a light-weight tee. Pair it with a skirt for the office or jeans for a night out on the town.
