As audience members strolled into the Grand Palais for the Chanel Fall 2014 show during Paris Fashion Week, they were stunned to find themselves in an authentic shopping center. At this mega store, where things were priced at 30-50% more, you were able to find just about anything. From “Coco Flakes” to bread, sugar, wine, cheese and even cleaning supplies – there were thousands of items in stock. Who knew you would be able to go to a fashion show and get your grocery shopping done at the same time? The supermodels strutting down the aisles made shopping at the supermarket seem so very glamorous.
Cara Delevingne opened the show in pink fitted workout gear with a tweed coat accompanied by a pair of multicolored sneakers. Different palettes of jumpsuits and trenches continued to come down the runway in hues of pink, purple and orange. Also seen were chain necklaces with huge padlocks attached to them, a trend we will most likely see in the future.
We then began to see remnants of the timeless Gabrielle Chanel, tweed suits and pearls. Moving towards the middle and end of the collection, we see few pops of color and a return to the chic and classic mixture of black and white.
All hair was pulled back into a ponytail that was detailed with ribbons braided in them. Instead of carrying bags, models carried decorated metal shopping bins, which often contained neon colored wallets. A pair of sneakers accompanied just about every single piece in this collection.
The idea of going to the grocery store comfortable and yet fashionable at the same time was an evident theme throughout the show. Karl Lagerfeld was able to demonstrate this in real time by having models start shopping for Chanel goodies when they reached the end of the runway.
Lagerfeld walked out with Delevingne as they closed the show. Audience members were then able to look around at all the supplies Chanel had to offer them. Unfortunately, the audience was only free to help themselves to fresh fruit and candy. However, that did not stop them from taking to Twitter and Instragramming pictures of themselves with Chanel’s branded products.
