Clubbin’ In The City: Club Wear, Please Wear It Chicly

Global — “I need a new outfit to wear to the club.” This is a statement that we ladies are notorious for using. Sometimes the chosen outfit skimpily falls short and not just in length but in taste, class, and dignity too. Frankly, some club wear is often nonexistent.

Avoid uber-mini dresses like this one worn by “Big Brother” winner Chantelle Houghton

Why must young (and sometimes older) ladies disrespect themselves in this way? Why does your brassiere have to be clearly visible under the mostly see-through or lacy top? Why does an outfit have to be so tight that you can barely move? Why do skirts and dresses have to be so short that it is impossible to sit down comfortably, without giving the person sitting across from you a mini peep show?

All of the above can frequently be seen at any nightclub and is entirely unnecessary.

There is nothing wrong with going out to a club or hot spot and returning home with your dignity in tact, all in the same night. Believe it or not, there are actually cute, non-revealing, club appropriate outfits that a woman can feel comfortable and enjoy wearing.

Go for a chic ensemble like this look sported by L’Uomo Vogue fashion editor Giovanna Battaglia (wearing Dolce & Gabbana), pictured with art dealer boyfriend Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld

Here are a few tips:

  1. Leave at least one body part to the imagination when dressing for the club. If you’re wearing a mini skirt, don’t pair it with a corset or bra top that reveals your cleavage in full.
  2. Wear a mini skirt with a bright, or sequined top that shows that you’re ready to have fun; but not that kind of fun!
  3. Don’t be afraid to wear a skinny jean or legging to the club. There is nothing wrong with wearing a pant so that you don’t have to feel restricted on the dance floor.
  4. Pair pants with a tank and some bold accessories.

Nothing against tight or short, just know that the way in which you decide to wear either one, is a determinant of how you will be perceived and the attention you will inevitably attract.

The 1930’s American actress Mae West said it best, “I like my clothes to be tight enough to show I’m a woman, but loose enough to show I’m a lady.”

Touché.
