The biggest night in the music industry, the Grammy Awards, is always a fun event of music and song and last night’s fiftieth annual show was no exception. While many commemorate the past year’s hits and misses, it’s undeniable that the red carpet had quite a few hits and misses of it’s own!
Because the L.A. event has a funkier vibe (as opposed to, say, the Oscars or Emmys), it’s always fun to see who shows up in a couture gown and who dons the jeans and tees.
Here are just a few of the celeb’s who dazzled us and those who, well, just looked frazzled at this years Grammys.
BEST
Fan of Flora: Carrie Underwood
Opening the show with her hit Before He Cheats, Carrie Underwood looked gorgeous as a smoldering rock and roll queen. Yet her girly floral red carpet gown really sparkled. Always a best-dressed attendee, Carrie looked as pretty as a Monet painting — her honor for best country song didn’t hurt either!
Perfect in Purple: Natasha Beddingfield
While many favor more traditional gowns, Natasha Beddingfield looked stunning in shiny purple pleats. Natasha’s grape glamour get up was modern and funky. With a matching belt, the monochromatic look works.
Feelin’ Blue: Rihanna
Risk taker Rihanna has received much acclaim, and not only for her awards! Jay-Z’s prodigy looked fabulous posing on the red carpet in an electric blue Zac Posen gown. Though Rihanna’s dress was certainly not a don’t, unfortunately, her ‘do was. She should have traded in the boyish, poufy hairstyle for her signature look — the jagged bob.
WORST
Mod on the Moon: Bai Ling
Bai Ling is certainly known for her incongruity, and her fashions are no exception. Bai’s odd spherical shaped dress was too juvenile and Santa’s helper-like for a woman her age, and the severe hairstyle only added to the strange look. While peter pan collars and bows can be chic, this ensemble was definitely more freak. But then again, maybe that’s the kind of thing one would wear to the red carpet on the moon.
Prom Queen: Taylor Swift
Though the country crooner is only eighteen, Taylor Swift’s dress appeared to be exactly that, too prom inspired for the nominee. All she’s missing is the sash and plastic rhinestone crown and she’d certainly win queen. While the pretty lavender color is nice with Taylor’s porcelain skin tone, the ill-fated prom look is something most of us would like to forget. Next time, Taylor should stick to a more swingy, youthful dress with layers that don’t overwhelm her tall, supermodel-like frame. This look should stay behind in the high school gymnasium!
Black Tie Despair: Fantasia
Yikes! Fantasia’s trash bag look topped off with her ugly, lopsided hairstyle was surely a head turner, and not in a good way. Not only were the yards of extra fabric distracting, the peculiar rouching and sporadic knots only added to her already overwhelming chaos. Maybe Fantasia should have stuck with a friendlier hue — the color purple perhaps?
