The universe has dealt a catastrophic blow to the fashion industry. Today, the first day of New York Fashion Week Fall 2010, avant garde fashion designer Alexander McQueen, 40, was found dead in his London home, an apparent suicide.

Known for his theatrical, brow-raising collections, McQueen was highly revered in this sometimes fickle industry for having a distinct voice in his designs. Although his work was not for the sartorially faint of heart, McQueen was a fashion master who could feasibly be described as being to the fashion world what Leonardo da Vinci is to the art world.
If he is to be compared to da Vinci then the last womenswear collection that he christened on the catwalk, Plato’s Atlantis, is his Mona Lisa — beautiful, mysterious, yet beguiling.

At a relatively young age with a blossoming career, McQueen will no doubt be a beacon for the evolution of new young designers who will look upon him as inspiration, study his fashion-forward designs, and someday hope to follow in his lofty footsteps.
