Mary Quant and the 50th Year of the Mini Skirt

GLOBAL — It’s been 50 years since the mini graced the pages of Vogue magazine, cementing the cropped skirt as a coveted look. Although others have been credited for creating the mini dress concept, Welsh designer Mary Quant popularized the mini skirt when she introduced her designs to the world in 1964 with her mod styling including the Vidal Sassoon bob and Kurt Geiger shoes with chunky stacked heel. Since the thigh-grazing skirt hit the fashion scene, it has been a style staple for fashionistas around the globe in myriad designs from plaid and preppy to leather and edgy. Check out my video below, in which I pay homage to Ms. Quant and the iconic garment.

Tips for wearing at 20, 30, and 40:
20s – Pair with tights and shoe boots for an edgy look. Have fun with flared and pleated styles in prints and patterns.
30s – Wear with a silky blouse and sky-high heels for a sleek look. Opt for straight and slightly flared style in solid colors or monochromatic prints.
40s – Coordinate with knee-high boots and a long billowy cardigan or structured blazer for a sophisticated look.
