I was recently speaking on style at a Women In History event when I was asked, “Everybody seems to wear a black dress to special occasions, how can I wear one and stand out?”
My response, in so many words, was that a person should wear what they are most comfortable in and look the best wearing, and when it comes to the LBD, most people feel slimmer, sleeker and more dressed up. But you can stand out in a sea of little black dresses — here’s what I advise:
First of all, select a black dress that is versatile like the cotton cady “Daisy” dress (above), $225 at jcrew.com. J. Crew has a section called The Little Black Dress Shop, which offeres a bevy of options. Then, depending on the event, select items to complement the dress.
A classic blazer or jacket is great for a Sunday brunch with the girls or a night on the town with that special guy. Try a tailored style with embellishments like the crested school boy blazer, about $120 at topshop.com.
Add pizzazz to your look with a classy clutch in a vibrant hue like the Melie Bianco croc clutch, $65 at shopintuition.com.
A contemporary heel or platform will add a modern flair to your look like a two-tone patent and leather peep-toe sling-back platform, $89 at ninewest.com.
Choose chic accessories like the Plisse leather headband, $90 at dominiqueduval.com.
You’re sure to shine in this chic ensemble …
