Fall is barely here and I’m ready to talk Spring 2008, the nerve of me! Overall the New York designers played it safer than past spring seasons. The only two major silhouette stand-outs I found consistent on the runway was the one shoulder neckline on dresses and the return of the maxi dress.
My favorite look as far as color trends go was the head to toe look of all white dressing, especially in structured suiting. If you can wear it, work it. Then there was pink — I’ve been channeling pink for months now and it seems like we will all have plenty of options this spring. From petal pink to fuschia, pink is back. Other pretty pops of colors was a smashing yellow and grey maxi dress by Vera Wang, a purple Narcisco Rodriguez dress and a spicy orange frock from DKNY.
1) Best Show for Spring 2008 – Michael Kors
Inspired by the famous lifestyle photographer Slim Aarons, Michael Kors collection was one quarter tailored, one quarter sexy, one quarter yummy, one quarter classic and 100% effortless. My favorite look of the season and of Michael’s show was the head-to-toe white suit shown on one of my favorite new models to hit the scene, Agyness Deyn. She’s the only model with a “look” these days and her haircut rocks. If that wasn’t enough, Michael had the nerve to show an oversized floppy hat in green stripes paired with sexy bikini bottoms and a long sleeve coordinating sweater which was simply HOT.

2) Head-to-Toe White
A prominent trend I saw across the shows was the head-to- toe white tailored suit. LOVE!!! I love this look because it looks so slick and seamless. Some designers who showed it best were Michael Kors (he’s the teacher’s pet), DKNY, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Diane von Furstenberg.
There were also some great white dresses that were simply gorgeous. McQ had a fabulous cape dress coat, and we know Tori Nichel loves a cape of any sorts — wait until I unveil Spring 2008. Zac Posen who has been quiet lately had a beautiful white party frock and Daryl K had a hot little moto rocker inspired dress for the hipster in you. I’m so glad she’s back on the fashion scene, we’ve missed her! Although Derek Lam’s show was a bit of a let down this season, he had a white dress perfect for Cannes.
3) The Little Black Dress
Ladies, every season we must update that “Little Black Dress” and for Spring Doo.Ri has the one for you. It’s short, masterfully constructed with a cocoon shape back detail and as you’ve learned from previous entries, I love a great back detail. This is a must have for spring ladies.
Thanks to Versace, Dior, Prada and Marc Jacobs fall ad campaigns or maybe just coincidence, pink is the new black for spring and it looks quite lovely executed in the right silhouettes. Badgley Mischka had an exquisite gown that Terri Hatcher wore to the Emmy’s that I thought looked simply lovely and the cut was quite simple. The big O, Señor De La Renta gave us hot pink for St. Barth’s. Barbara Tfank boldy attempted pink in a structured jacket — not sure if that’s the pink look I recommend for you ladies this spring, I’m just putting it out there, that’s my job.
Michael Kors, LOVE HIM and Diane Von Furstenberg showed a color blocked maxi sundress in pink and mint green that was screaming beach diva. Badgley Mischka had a lovely pink ombre chiffon dress that gave DVF’s girl a run for her money.
6) Thanks to Marc Jacobs Fall 2007 show hats are back ladies.
So if you didn’t get the memo for fall, you have it now, HATS!!! If you don’t have big hair like me, work it baby. And get ready because spring designers showed them every which way. The cloche, the fedora and the oversized floppy were the stand-outs. Once again, Michael Kors showed the best hat look.
7) One Shoulder Dress Silhouette a la Halston
Designers were channeling one of the greats with a slew of variations of the one shoulder neckline paired with long and short hemlines. Zac Posen showed a sexy black pant look, L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani (love her and her hot husband) had a sexy little spectator look, Malandrino’s silver liquid frock was a beauty as well. Even though Rodarte’s show veered off their usual path this season, they showed a gorgeous purple and lavender ombre cocktail dress.
8) Poolside Beauties
Tracy Reese showed some hot little swim numbers in a perfect shade of plush lavender. That’s effortless, right?
9) I must end my spring fashion show re-cap with Heatherette
Kudos to them for opening their show with five models of color! My favorite look from the boys was a sexy mini white dress, which was also one of the opening looks and a strapless white eyeleted mini dress, perfect for any spring fling.
Until next time, Live, Love and Smile ~ Tori Nichel
