aliyah: The Princess of R&B, a highly-anticipated tell-all biopic on Aaliyah’s rise to fame before her tragic death in a 2001 plane crash, recently aired on Lifetime. Admittedly, I was excited to watch the TV movie and although it didn’t meet my expectations, the show did remind me that Aaliyah was not only a multi-platimum recording artist, but a trendsetting style icon too. Known affectionately in the music industry as ‘Baby Girl’, Aaliyah hit the music scene as a teen in the 90s. With hits such as “Back & Forth” (1994), “One In A Million” (1996) and “Try Again” (2000), Aaliyah’s music skyrocketed her to the top. She also made a mark on the movie industry starring in action film Romeo Must Die (2000) and horror flick Queen of the Damned (2002). In addition to award-winning beats and on-screen allure, Aaliyah had a stellar sense of style. In the early years, her signature look featured hair parted to the side and draped over one eye, baggie jeans paired with fitted muscle tees, and dark berry lips – her style was street, but sweet. In her twenties she glammed it up, bringing an elegance to the Hip Hop culture with leather crop tops and silky track pants. Here are a few trends Aaliyah inspired and rocked in the 90s.
