New York — Most people are aware that New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has come to an end and all eyes are focused on London at the moment, but I’m uncertain if I can focus on anything at the moment. After a week of assisting for the Oscar de la Renta show that happened Thursday, I am far beyond fashion overload.
From the editors previewing the collection, to models missing fittings due to show times, I’m not sure I can handle three more fashion weeks. NYFW was an incredible experience, by far one of the best I’ve ever had, but almost as exhausting as it was amazing.
The week began with castings and prep on Sunday and Monday. The cream of the svelt crop walked the runway including Karlie, Chanel, Isabeli, Constance, Karolina, Coco, Liu Wen, Catherine, Lily and Magdalena. It seemed as if the list would never stop growing, nor would the size of my eyes basking in all this beauty.
Sweet as they could be, the ladies visited us for fittings over the next two days. At 7:30a, my fellow assistant Ariel and I drove from Brooklyn to Fashion Avenue, reporting for duty, and the madness ensued.

Street clothes coming off, suits and gowns going on, then off, then on again, until the looks were confirmed and the lineup was set. After packing up the collection we made it home about 11:30 p.m. the night before the show. One more quick-fitting in the morning and it was off to the venue, a gorgeous church with a dazzling white runway and white wooden chairs set in measured rows.
With the front of the house gorgeous — full of the fashion elite — the back of the house filled with dressers, designers, and the production team, a quick entrance through the back by Rachel Zoe and a tornado accompanied by torrential rain brewing outside, the show began.
A 25-cent piece found under Isabeli Fontana’s rack after the collection was packed. A program folder found on the venue floor after the show.
Imagining what the show looks like on the runway is about as much as I can do until I see the video, but the girls looked beyond stunning even in the midst of rolling racks and lighting cable. Not twelve minutes later, the show was over, and it was time to prep for the second which happened just an hour later.
One thorough inventory later, after packing the collection back up and putting it on the truck to go back to the office, it was over. Just like that, I caught the first flight back to San Francisco and real life slapped me in the face.
