It Was A Night To Remember With Unforgettable Winners and Fashion
The 2014 Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards kicked off June 2nd in the Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Director and screenwriter John Waters hosted the event, which was truly a night to remember. Among the myriad designers nominated, there were less than a dozen presented, some of which were honorary awards.
The first winner of the night receiving the “Menswear Designer of the Year” award was Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow for Public School. Following the young duo was Christian Dior’s Raf Simons, who emotionally accepted the “International Award” for his work as a designer.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, dressed nearly matching in black dresses with pulled back buns revealing their beautifully crafted dangling earrings, claimed their “Accessories Designer of the Year” award for The Row. Next, Anna Wintour took to the stage and happily presented the “Icon Award” to Rihanna, who wore a head-turning sheer sparkling Adam Selman dress, revealing both her chest and derriere, and draped in a pale pink fur stole. It’s safe to say that this look is one for the fashion history books. “Fashion should never be frustrating, it should be fun.” Rihanna said.
As the night continued, the Swarovski Award winners were announced including Irene Neuwirth for accessories, Tim Coppens for Menswear, and Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters for Womenswear. Of course we cannot forget the “Eleanor Lambert Founders” award, which was awarded to fashion activist Bethann Hardison for her persistent fight for diversity in the fashion industry
The one award that many seemed to be anticipating was the presentation of the “Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement” award. Richard Buckley, his husband, presented the award to none other than the iconic Tom Ford. “It’s been a wonderful 25 years and I could have never achieved it without all the people in this room,” Ford said after receiving his award.
Before the 2014 CFDA Awards came to a close, Joseph Altuzarra was presented with the ‘Womenswear Designer of the Year” award and Waters ended the event with a memorable quote, “Fashion is power.”
Yes, a night to remember indeed.
