GLOBAL — Some of my most favorite films to watch are those based on true stories such as "42" starring upcoming actor Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson, the famed baseball player who crossed racial barriers to become the first African American to play in the MLB for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
I didn't get a chance to see this film at the theater. I imagined it to be a film deeply involved with the sport of baseball. But when asked to watch the soon-to-be released DVD of the film, I jumped at the opportunity. Having heard about the manner in which Robinson's heroic story is explored in the film, including his bond with his supportive wife Rachel Robinson played by Nicole Beharie (above) and his relationship with hard-nosed Brooklyn Dodgers' general manager Branch Rickey played by Harrison Ford (below), I became intrigued.
More than an historical account of inequality in baseball, it is a human story about personal determination, sacrifice, and relationships. Robinson was met with harsh ridicule from fellow players and onlookers during games, yet his resolve was unbreakable with the support of his wife Rachel, manager Rickey, and some teammates. I enjoyed how the story highlighted these connections and moral dilemmas that many faced during this time. But more poignantly, how Robinson rose above the adversity to become an American legend who challenged the norms of the day and helped usher in a new era. This film is definitely a film to add to your collection!
Take Note: The "42" DVD comes chock full of goodies including behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive interviews with Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford. The film will be released July 16 on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download including UltraViolet, $28.98-$35.99.
