Global — A foot-tapping, shoulder-bouncing, make you want to dance in the isle movie is the best way to describe Footloose. The remake of the 1984 teen classic starring Kevin Bacon (Crazy, Stupid, Love.) and Lori Singer (The Falcon and the Snowman) measures up in every way and even delivers an extra surprise in the beginning that the original did not.
Julianna Hough (Burlesque), of "Dancing with the Stars" joins newcomer Kenny Wormald (Center Stage: Turn It Up) to star as the tart teens Ariel Moore and Ren MacCormack, who decide to buck the system to transform their rhythmless town into a dancing mecca. At first I was not sure what to expect. Would this be a carbon copy of the original? Would it be as entertaining? Would it make me want to dance? It was a resounding yes to all!
Before watching the remake, I rewatched the original, and I am glad I did. What sets the new film apart from it's predecessor is how the plot is developed. In the original it's like we are served up this outlandish situation where a town has banned music and dancing. No reason is given, that's just how it is. In addition, we don't see the lead characters evolve in a way that we are given a back story and allowed to bond with them. In the new Footloose, you are satisfied from beginning to end, thanks to director Craig Brewer (Black Snake Moan, Hustle & Flow) who adds a twist to the beginning. Not to say the original was not satisfying, though. There is just a bit more to this film that makes it not only entertaining but fulfilling. Oh, and the dance moves are wicked. You'll find it quite difficult to sit still throughout the film, I did.
