PLOT: British actor Idris Elba, with his deep resonating voice – which I heard in person when I interviewed him – stars as Stacker Pentecost in Pacific Rim, an action-packed sci-fi film about a futuristic world where Earth is in battle with gigantic Godzilla-like sea creatures that have apparently visited Earth before, a.k.a. prehistoric dinosaurs. They've waged war on humanity and to combat these oversized reptilians, nations have joined forces to build an army of ginormous robots powered by the minds and bodies of highly trained soldiers who have learned to sync their minds – also known as drifting – with that of their teammate. Elba leads this team of soldiers, which includes Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket. Becket, who lost his brother on a previous mission is paired up with trainer Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). I love that this film introduces fresh faces to the big screen, especially Hannum, who's not only easy on the eyes, but has great chemistry with the rest of the cast.
ENGAGEMENT: You can't help but be on the edge of your seat during this film. For someone who has watched old Godzilla movies, there was a similarity but a new twist with the robots. The dinosaur versus robot battles were fiery and had you routing for the big metal man. Before seeing the film all I could think of was "Transformers" but this film definitely took the enormous robotic structure in a different direction.
STYLE: If combat gear is the look you crave, it's in abundance here with padded and body-hugging uniforms. But, the major costume that steals the show is the robot that is a suit of – armour digitally created of course – operated by two soldiers who move the machine rhythmically across land and through the sea. It's absolutely awesome to watch!
