“If I Stay” May Be Most Romantic Movie of the Year

August 20142705Views

We’ve seen a lot of young adult films lately, but If I Stay definitely takes the cake in being one of the most romantic, tearjerker movies of summer. Just like the book that it is based off of from Gayle Forman, the film not only shows the magical and difficult moments of love, but it also makes the audience aware that life can change in a blink of an eye.

Even though some viewers might compare it to another recent romantic movie The Fault in Our Stars, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, “If I Stay” is not the typical young adult movie; simply because of how the storyline is set up and how the actors played their roles in a very unique manner. The movie is also different because audiences can connect with it on so many levels. Whether it be because of a first love, a life changing moment or even for love of music, “If I stay” has something for everyone.

In the film, Chloë Grace Moretz plays a young girl named Mia who always felt like she was different than the rest of her family, since her dad Denny (Joshua Leonard) was part of a band, her mom Kat (Mireille Enos) was the wild groupie and her brother Teddy (Jakob Davies) is a free spirit. She instead, is drawn to a different side of music and begins playing the chello. Mia then is noticed by the famous rocker boy at school Adam (Jamie Blackley), and asked her on a date.

As time passes, Mia and Adam spend much time together, but later find themselves in a difficult situation when their dreams take them to different directions. Adam and his band keep getting gigs and sign a record deal and Mia decides to apply to Juilliard and has been given a chance to audition. Neither one wants to leave the other, but their dreams are just too big and decide that it was time to let go. Later in the story, Mia and her family decide to visit her grandparents during a snowy day and end up in a horrible accident. She then wakes up only to find that she is outside of her body and is actually in a coma. Now it’s up to her whether she lives or dies.

Overall, “If I Stay” is amazing. It can be a little difficult to follow and overwhelming at times, so when you head to the theaters to watch this film, make sure to be prepared for an emotional roller-coaster ride.
