Designer Marina Makaron
Moscow — Russian-born designer Marina Makaron has traveled around the world from Europe to the United States. Armed with a degree in International Business from Drexel University, the fashion-forward designer launched the eponymous line Marina Makaron Moscow, fashioned from luxurious silks and inspired by her culture. Her collection ranges from fashion and accessories to home décor.
I recently caught up with Marina to discuss her line. Here’s what she had to say:
The Chic Spy: What inspired you to start your own business?
Marina Makaron: I am a multi-tasker-perfectionist-think-outside-the-box kinda girl. I gave office life a fair trial but it just wasn’t for me. I am willing to work overtime no holidays, so since I’m already devoting all my time why not contribute it to something I am passionate about.
TCS: Do you create the designs on the silk fabric yourself and if so, is there a special process or inspiration that you use?
MM: I create the patterns on the computer and then through a safe secret magical process they get transformed on the fabric.

TCS: What inspires your collection of vibrantly-colored silks?
MM: Nature and fairytales. Broken hearts and photography. A child’s naiveness and lustful masochism. The land of dreams.
TCS: Do you get inspiration from other fashion designers and if so, who are they?
MM: I am inspired by interior designers and artists like Gaudi. Fashion revolutionaries like Cappuci fascinate me as well. I am attracted to those who cross the boundaries of nature, architecture, color and fashion. Those artists that create works of art rather than fast food fashion or celebrity fads.
TCS: Your dresses and tunics are reminiscent of the styling of a kimono and afghan wraps. Do you draw inspiration from other cultures?
MM: Always and of course. Crossing boundaries is what I like to do. I like to take an idea and make it universal, as in fitting for many uses and occasions.
TCS: How long have you been a fashion and accessories designer?
MM: I have been designing since I can remember but I got into accessories and fashion in 2007, although it feels like I’ve been doing it for decades.
TCS: How would you describe your designs in three words?
MM: Bright, happy, and chic.
TCS: If you could dress anyone famous past or present, who would it be?
MM: Anna Piaggi and Lady Gaga.
TCS: If you weren’t a designer, what would you be doing?
MM: I would be a secret designer.
TCS: If you were a chic spy, what would be your name?
MM: Can’t tell you, cause I’ll have to, you know.
