PLOT: Adapted from bestselling novel, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones stars Lily Collins as Clary Fray, an ordinary teenager living in New York City, whose life is transferred after her mother (Lena Headey) mysteriously vanishes and she encounters Shadowhunter Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower), a half angel being who leads a secret existence in what's known as the Downworld. Shadowhunters walk the Earth side-by-side with Mundanes, what they call humans, and are able to remain unseen. After encountering Jace, Clary learns how her life intersects with this hidden world and joins forces with a group of Shadowhunters to battle demons, warlocks, and vampires while on a quest to find her mother.
ENGAGEMENT: Lilly Collins, who auditioned for the role of Bella in "Twilight" is no mundane actress in this film. She delivers a strong performance and from the onset is believable as a strong powerful young woman, new to her abilities. Having not read the novel, I was not sure what to expect, but the plot twist involving Clary and Jace along with the introduction of scary demons that can cloak themselves as anyone, kept me intrigued.
STYLE: Costuming is dark, as with the theme of the film, but not overlydramatic. A fall trend even makes an appearance when Clary's onscreen look is revamped and she starts wearing a moto/biker jacket. I love spotting fashion trends on the big screen.
