The latest spy flick on my radar is action comedy Mortdecai starring Johnny Depp as debonair British art dealer Charlie Mortdecai and Gwenyth Paltrow as his beguiling wife Johanna, whom he adores even though she abhors his new handlebar mustache. Despite the fact that he’s on the verge of bankruptcy, Mortdecai lives a life of luxury. He resides in a palatial estate, drives a vintage Rolls Royce and has a loyal manservant Jock (Paul Bettany), who flaunts some serious combat skills. These agent-like skills come in handy considering Mortdecai has a penchant for shady deals that land him in compromising positions incudng an art heist involving disgruntled Russians, art thieves, and a British Mi5 agent (Ewan McGregor), who’s smitten with his wife.
There’s some funny moments in this action comedy, no doubt, but what makes this spy spoof a must watch is Depp’s ability to make the presumedly self-absorbed, entitled and aloof Mortdecai, likable. You also can’t help but love the chemistry Mortdecai has with Johanna and Jock. Another element that makes this funny film a hit is the style. Mortdecai’s wardrobe runs the gamut from velvet blazers and tweed waistcoats to 3-piece suits, while Johanna’s designer looks feature a cashmere blazer, riding boots, and a camel moto jacket. Also spotted were a few eye-catching accessories including a royal blue Hermès Birkin bag and a set of ivory Globe Trotter luggage.
Laughs and luxury, this film delivered it all!
