A cross between "Glee" and "Bring It On" is how I would describe the movie Pitch Perfect. The film surrounds the collegiate lives of students whose extra-curricular activity of choice is singing and competing in acappella competitions. Anna Kendrick (The Twilight Saga: Beaking Dawn Part I) stars as Beca, a college freshman who reluctantly joins an all girl singing group on campus, known as the 'The Bellas' whose nemesis and main rival is an all boy group called the 'The Treblemakers'. As you can imagine there's lots of singing and covering songs, surprisingly some are very good hits from both the past such as "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds and the present such as "Just A Dream" by Nelly.
This film follows the classic coming-of-age comedy with the woe-is-me teen, their goofy sidekicks and of course, a romantic interest. But it's funny and the singing is quite good. A nod is given to the John Hughes 80s classic, "The Breakfast Club," about teens who have to spend a day in detention getting to know each other and learning to accept each other's differences. Pitch Perfect also explores that notion, but with levity; making fun of everything with a smidge of political incorrectness. It's almost to say, "don't take life too seriously" or "It's okay to laugh at yourself."
All-in-all, this is the perfect flick to catch this weekend with your BFFs. Grab brunch, go shopping, and watch "Pitch Perfect." It's great for a few laughs and a musically entertaining time.
