Global — Can a big metropolis like New York City truly be safe, especially for a preteen girl? The answer is YES, that is of course if she has Jason Statham (Killer Elite, Transporter 3) as an escort, eliminating any possible threat. Well, that is the premise of his latest film entitled none other than Safe.
Mei (Catherine Chan), a young Chinese girl who has a gift for memorizing numbers, finds herself whisked away from her hometown in China and relocated to the Big Apple in the hands of the Asian mob, where she becomes relentlessly pursued by the Russian mafia and corrupt NYC cops. You can imagine the mayhem that ensues when Chan and Statham's (Luke Wright) characters cross paths on the subway and he realizes she needs his help and the two are suddenly on the run together – shocker, right?

Now we all know that I have a serious love hate relationship with Jason Statham. Love his movies, hate I can't see a new one every other week. But, I digress. What makes this movie a must-see besides Statham's handsome factor and the edge-of-seat action scenes is the new talented actress Catherine Chan and the chemistry her character Mei has with Luke, which feels genuine. She's a little damsel in distress and he comes to save her. Interestingly enough though, Mei navigates herself quite nicely in the mean streets of New York City. She is depicted less as a victim and more as a young heroin because she theoretically saves Luke's life as well (who's dealing with his own demons), just as much as he saves her. Statham and his little co-star definitely deliver an entertaining time!
