“I’d never given much thought to how I would die, but dying in the place of someone I love seems like a good way to go.”
Remember when we were first introduced to Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) onscreen as she uttered those eerie words in the opening scene of “Twilight?” She was moving from sunny Phoenix, Arizona to rainy Forks, Washington, where she would be reacquainted with old friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) and meet new friend Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).
From there we embarked on a journey as she struggled to choose between her two admirers. Some of us professed our loyalty, declaring to be team Edward or team Jacob. But when Bella chose Edward, the 100-year-old brooding vampire, over the sensitive wolf boy, we couldn’t help but fall in love with the forbidden lovers; he an immortal vampire and she a mere mortal.
They are the Romeo and Juliet of the 21st Century, and their love is the kind made of legends. Who knew that it would culminate into the latest film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – Bella marrying and eventually being sired by Edward after giving birth to their daughter Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy), besides of course, those who read Stephanie Meyers‘ “Twilight” books?
Even as someone who hasn’t read any of the books, dare I say, I believed I knew what to expect, after all, the top secret ending was hardly a secret. Duh, it was laid out in print for all to see. But there is an air of something new.
Bella is no longer the mousy Emo girl. She is a vamp with vigor in her step, poise in her stature, and a sharpness in her senses. She has quick speed, indestructible strength, and an insatiable appetite (unluckily for the deer she ravishes early in the film).
Most prominent is her confidence and with all these new weapons in her arsenal, she is determined to stand with her coven of vampires, plus a few wolves, and protect her daughter from vampire rulers, the Volturi, who view Renesmee as a threat.
What makes me love the “Twilight” finale is the delivery of the unexpected. You may think you know how it all ends, but just as Volturi leader Aro (Michael Sheen) discovers – with a simple touch, Aro can read all the thoughts and memories someone has ever had – things may not be quite as they seem.
