PLOT: My favorite mutant returns in The Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman. Not being a comic book reader, I eagerly awaited this film because I was excited to see the direction the film would take after Jean (Famke Janssen) killed Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen) was stripped of his powers, and Jean died at the hands (or should I say claws) of Wolverine a.k.a. Logan. This film resumes with Logan living in the woods, riddled with guilt for killing Jean, who haunts him in recurring nightmares. He encounters Yukio (Rila Fukushima), a sword-wielding young woman who convinces him to go to Tokyo to see an old acquaintance who is dying. Once in Japan, Logan becomes embroiled in a plot that involves killing Yukio's sister, played by Tao Okamoto, who is new to the big screen but well known on the runway.
ENGAGEMENT: As expected, the film is action-packed including stealth martial arts scenes. I enjoyed the storyline and acting of both emerging actresses Fukushima and Okamoto. Okamoto, who could very well be the first Japanese supermodel – having been the face of brands such as Ralph Lauren and Emporio Armani – is the leading lady opposite Jackman. Although she's a newcomer, you couldn't tell from her chemistry with the leading man.
STYLE: Primarily set in Tokyo, the styling ranges from modern to traditional. The kimonos and ceremonial dress worn in the film beautifully showcase styling in the Japanese culture.
