For my latest movie mission I’ve set my radar on the superhero battle of the year, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, this adventure flick was long awaited.
When intel first leaked that Ben Affleck was taking on the role of Batman, for the upcoming DC Comic film, there was an understandable outcry from comic book enthusiasts. After all, he was questionable as the other red-suited vigilante—would he do any better in head-to-toe black? Well, here’s how Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice measures up on my radar rating.
Plot: In this film, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) is dealing with some personal demons stemming from him witnessing the murder of his parents as a child—he’s on vengeance overcharge. Meanwhile, Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) is getting a bad rep in public opinion as the media paints him the fallen hero with a God complex. Behind all the chaos is Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), of course. But there’s a new superhero (or shall I say super heroine) when Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) arrives on the scene. Will she save the day? We don’t learn the answer to that quandary until late in the movie.
Engagement: In the beginning the film drags and the storyline is predictable. The action scenes are not as daredevil (pun intended) as one might expect from a comic book adapted film, but it’s enough to keep you entertained. What truly keeps the movie engaging is knowing that at any time Wonder Woman will reveal herself, and when she does, it is well worth the wait! There have been talks about a Wonder Woman movie in the works for a while, but finding the right woman to take on the role of the fashionable Amazonian, proved to be quite the task. But casting of the Israeli actress worked well.
Style: The style in this film was a highlight. From Batman’s black armor that is fierce enough to make the Dark Knight of Gotham hold is own with the supernatural superheroes, to the glamorous gowns Diana Prince wore that were embellished with gold accents reminiscent of her battle gear—it was a sight to behold. The costuming captured what the storyline lacked, a major WOW factor!
