GLOBAL — There was much fodder on and offline when actress Anne Hathaway lopped off her raven locks for her starring roll in "Les Misérable" (2012). But the lithe actress gets the last laugh, because not only did she win an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for the film, the pixie 'do she got as a result of that role has been named "The Most Influential Haircut of All Time" by the Hairdressing Council of Great Britain and Universal Pictures.

In a poll they conducted, 1000 people voted on the most influential onscreen haircut of all time and Hathaway beat out a bevy of beauties with her cropped hairdo, including second place Jennifer Aniston who sported a long shaggy look for "Along Came Polly" (2004) and third place Audrey Hepburn who donned a coiffed updo for "Charades" (1963).

Celebs frequently have to make drastic changes to their appearance to accomodate a roll, causing us to gasp; from Renee Zelweger's weight gain for "Bridget Jones's Diary" (2001) to the uglification of Charlize Theron in "Monster" (2003). When it comes to hair-raising changes, Demi Moore in "G.I. Jane" and her baldness, come to mind. Admittedly Hathaway's short style was not as dramatic.

When most hemmed and hawed about how the look did not become her, it grew on me. Sure it's a far cry from her chicness in "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006) or cuteness in "The Princess Diaries" (2001), but after all, its the evolution of a good actress. Offscreen however, I do think other actresses mastered the crop well before Hathaway embraced the look including Halle Berry, Ginnifer Goodwin, Michelle Williams, and Charlize Theron.

According to the poll, 1 in 10 women were inspired to go short after the film, but before you run out to your stylist and request the cut, there's a beauty code to rocking the pixie 'do and it's determined by your face shape. Round and oval work best with this hairstyle, accentuating features such as striking cheek bones and dramatic eyes.
