It has been announced that Sofia Coppola is set to direct Universal Pictures’ live-action adaption of The Little Mermaid. Known for her penchant for taking projects that focus on teen angst such as The Bling Ring and The Virgin Suicides, this will be Coppola’s first film based on a child’s novel. It’s not sure if she’ll go for the original version of the story from Hans Christian Andersen or a more Disney depiction, but if her directorial history of helming grittier projects is any indication, we can expect something on the darker side, similar to Rupert Sanders‘ Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart.
Wonder who will win the coveted role as the mermaid? Maybe Elle Fanning, the lil’ sis of Dakota, who co-starred in Coppola’s film Somewhere or Emma Roberts, Julia’s niece. One thing we know for sure, the film will be incredibly beautiful. Remember Marie Antoinette?
