LOS ANGELES — Film and television award season is here with nominations being announced for the Screen Actor’s Guild and Golden Globe Awards this past week. Recently, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that seven films remain in competition in the “Makeup and Hairstyling” category for the 86th Academy Awards: “American Hustle,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters,” “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,” and “The Lone Ranger.” In honor of the occasion, I’ve picked my top three in the category who I believe masterly captured the era and brought the characters to life.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Set in a futuristic world, the style is ornate and the makeup and hair are just as opulent. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” takes first spot for best in makeup and hair for the elaborate detail and design from hair brightly colored and embellished with feathers, to bejeweled lashes. The Great Gatsby
A very close second is the Baz Luhrmann adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” Set in the 1920’s, the makeup and hair are befitting the era with perfectly coiffed bobs, dramatic eyes, and bold lips. Above: Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan
American Hustle
Coming in third is “American Hustle” with an aesthetic that is the zeitgeist of the 70s. The beauty is reminiscent of the disco era with big hair and bold makeup. Above: Amy Adams as Sydney Prosser
All members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists division will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven films and will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration on Saturday, Jan. 11th. The 86th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 a.m. PST.
