If you haven’t discovered Fox’s new hit show Empire, you don’t know what you’re mixing. Produced by Lee Daniels (The Butler), co-starring Terrance Howard (Hustle & Flow) and Taraji P. Henson (Think Like A Man), this new dramatic series is about to change the vibe of primetime TV.
Sayonara reality stars and adios celebrity housewives, there’s a new drama queen in town and her name is Cookie Lyon. Cookie, played by Henson, is fresh out of prison after spending 17 years for her ex-husband Lucious Lyon played by Howard. Lucious is a former drug-dealing, street rapper-turned music mogul and founder of Empire Entertainment. The show kicks off with Lucious discovering he is terminally ill. He makes plans for one of his sons to take over the family business and immediately pits them against each other. Soon he discovers things are about to change in a big way when his ex-wife Cookie returns to reclaim her portion of the empire.
Cookie shows up on the scene and turns Lucious’ life upside down, when she reminds him that if it weren’t for her doing time for his crooked dealings, he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to build a successful music business. Between Cookie’s return, Lucious’ terminal illness, their bi-polar oldest son Andre (Trai Byers), gay middle son Jamal (Jussie Smollett), hothead youngest son Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray), and Lucious’ jealous live-in girlfriend Anika (Grace Gealey), it’s about to got steamy.
With calculating characters, sinister secrets, and booming beats – this show is destined to put primetime soaps back on the radar. No doubt, “Empire” heats up TV. Check it out Wednesdays 9|8 C.
